Flugplatz Sperenberg

and Kummersdorf

The former Prussian and German military testing centers and shooting range at Kummersdorf was taken over by the Soviet forces after the Second World War. They made Sperenberg their main military airport from 1958 until they left in 1994.

Ain’t much been happening there since. The locals like it that way. They’d been putting up with an awful racket from all the goings on since the Dicke Bertha (Big Bertha) howitzer was being tested at Kummersdorf in 1914. Then renowned Nazi rocket scientist Wernher von Braun tested his initial A1 and A2 liquid-fueled rockets at Sperenberg in the early 1930s before moving his operations to Peenemünde at the Baltic. Then the Soviets showed up…
