Karlshorst

Germany’s Soviet Military Administration Headquarters was in Karlshorst, where Generelfeldmarschall Wilhelm Keitel signed the unconditional surrender of German troops, putting an end to World War 2 on May 9, 1945. The Soviets just stayed, for quite a while actually. When East Germany was formed on Oct. 7, 1949, the SMAD was replaced three days later by the Soviet Control Commission and the last Russians didn’t leave until 1994.

Photos here are from 2009 and 2010, before the building was spruced up for apartments. It ain’t abandoned anymore.
